This particular watch is based on a 1957 pattern watch. It features a box sapphire crystal that looks outwardly identical to the original plexiglass crystal. The movement is a Ronda R 150 or equivalent, a sophisticated 25-jewel automatic movement with an impressive frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). This precision-crafted powerhouse boasts a substantial 38-hour power reserve, ensuring enduring performance. Notably equipped with hacking and hand-winding capabilities, it exemplifies both efficiency and convenience.

The watch uses Luminova instead of Tritium, which was used in the 1950s. The main advantage of Luminova is that, unlike Tritium, it does not deteriorate with age and is non-radioactive. The luminous paint color on this variant is identical to the original 1950s models.

This watch measures 39mm in diameter and is supplied with a high-quality calf leather strap and a presentation box.

The History of Aeschbach Watches

The original WWII watches made for the Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe were produced by a large number of Swiss and German manufacturers, including Aeschbach, which was founded in 1923 and continues to exist to this day.

Aeschbach was a leading WWII manufacturer but faced significant misfortune during the war due to its location in Pforzheim, a town in southwestern Germany that was heavily bombed. The largest and most devastating raid was conducted by the Royal Air Force (RAF) on the evening of February 23, 1945. This attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 17,600 people, or 31.4% of the town's population, and destroyed about 83% of Pforzheim's buildings. The raid devastated two-thirds of the town, including the Aeschbach workshops, which were completely destroyed, halting watch production.

However, the company saw a revival some years ago when a family member, while sorting through an elderly deceased relative's belongings, discovered that many of the original technical drawings and a quantity of watches had survived. This find enabled him to devise a plan to restart the company, marking the return of Aeschbach watches.

Benefits of Sapphire Crystal

Many people ask about the benefits of sapphire crystal over the original plexiglass. Synthetic sapphire is by far the best material for watch crystals because it is very strong and also shatter and scratch resistant. These characteristics make it very appealing to military and security personnel, police officers, and people who lead active outdoor lifestyles—groups that account for over 70% of our customers.

The original plexiglass crystals, made of a plastic/acrylic type material used in the 1960s, suffered drawbacks: they were easily scratched and could crack upon impact, which also limited the water resistance of the watch. Our observations show that over 90% of watches with cracked crystals have mineral glass or plexiglass. Even with hardened mineral crystals, they do not match the durability of sapphire under adverse conditions. Sapphire crystals are robust because, after manufacturing, the sapphire glass is heat-treated to remove internal stresses, which can cause weakness. The crystals are then coated with two layers of anti-reflective coating. This process is also used in the latest iPhone screens. Although sapphire crystal comes at a higher cost, it is typically found in higher-end watches due to its longevity, resilience, and superior performance.
